Sheila Morgan, PFT, POCT, EMT-B is an experienced Pulmonary Function Technologist who joined Southern West Virginia Health System in 2010, and who has been working with the Black Lung Program for nearly 36 years. Since then, she has been working to improve the health and wellness of the patients she sees by providing local access to pulmonary services in southern West Virginia.  

Sheila Morgan, PFT, POCT, EMT-B leads our West Virginia Black Lung Program.  She also assists with the Pulmonary Rehabilitation program at our SWVHS-Man location. Sheila is National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Certified for Spirometry Testing and Certified for Respirator Fit Testing. Sheila is also a Point of Care Technician and volunteers as the Emergency Medical Services Coordinator and Training Officer and serves as an EMT at a local fire department. Sheila assists with pulmonary function tests at our other SWVHS locations as needed.

What is a PFT?  

PFT stands for Pulmonary Function Technologist. Pulmonary function technologists are educated individuals with knowledge and focus on respiratory concerns.  

What is a POCT?  

POCT stands for Point of Care Technician. POCT’s are licensed and they complete CLIA Waived laboratory services in clinical settings such as: 

  • Hospital floors for inpatients 
  • Emergency Departments 
  • Physician offices and clinics 
  • Healthcare diagnostic areas 

What is a EMT-B?  

EMT-B stands for Emergency Care Technician-Basic. These individuals completed the requirements to become a basic level emergency medical technician in response to emergency situations.  

What is the Black Lung Program?  

The Black Lung Program assists active, inactive, retired, and disabled U.S. coal miners that are affected by job-related lung disease, along with those who may be facing respiratory problems. According to a report from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, one in ten underground coal miners who have worked in the mines for at least 25 years were diagnosed as having black lung disease.   

What can I expect at a Black Lung Program Appointment?  

During your appointment, you will receive one on one specialty care that focuses on respiratory services. During your appointment you may discuss your social and medical history, visit with your provider to see if/what tests will need to be ordered, and receive education on topics that will benefit you and your health.

What is Pulmonary Function Testing? 

Pulmonary Function Testing is a non-invasive test that measures: 

  • How much air you can breathe in and out of your lungs 
  • How easily and how fast you can blow air out of your lungs 

What is the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program?  

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a supervised education and exercise program designed to help people with breathing problems return to a healthier and more active life. This is a 12-week program to help patients with diseases referred to as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) which include: 

  • Emphysema 
  • Chronic Bronchitis 
  • Asthma 

And helps patients who are diagnosed with: 

  • Black Lung Disease 

What is NIOSH Certified spirometry testing?  

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Certified for Spirometry Testing is a test to assess your lung function. During your spirometry test, it will measure how much air you are inhaling and exhaling out of your lungs as well as how easily and fast you can blow the air out of your lungs.  This testing plays an important role in occupational respiratory health surveillance to help determine if a worker has a respiratory impairment.   

What is a fit test?  

Fit tests are conducted to ensure that a respirator is comfortable and protective for the one wearing the respirator. A respirator is a mask that is worn to protect yourself from inhaling airborne contaminants.
