Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the purpose of the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program?

The WVBCCSP was created to reduce illness and death from breast and cervical cancer by helping women get the preventive screenings they need. The program ensures that financial barriers, transportation challenges, or lack of insurance does not prevent women from receiving essential care.

Why are breast and cervical cancer screenings important?

Both breast and cervical cancers can often be treated successfully when detected early. Regular mammograms and Pap tests can find changes long before symptoms appear, giving women the best chance for early treatment and positive outcomes.

What happens if my screening shows an abnormal result?

Abnormal results do not always mean cancer. They may indicate minor changes that simply need monitoring or follow-up testing. If additional care is needed, our team will help you schedule diagnostic services, explain what to expect, and connect you to appropriate specialists. The WVBCCSP may also assist in coordinating further care.

Do I need a referral to participate?

You do not need a referral to learn more about the program. You can contact Southern West Virginia Health System directly, and our staff will guide you through the process.

Will insurance cover any services I receive under the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program?

If you're uninsured or underinsured, the WVBCCSP can cover the cost of your screening. Our staff will work with you to determine eligibility and help you navigate any paperwork.

What should I expect from my first appointment?

Your first appointment will include a conversation about your health history and any necessary test(s). If results show any concerns, our staff will guide you through the next steps with care and support.

Please bring the following:
