Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can a Family Medicine provider care for children?

Yes! Family medicine providers are trained to care for patients across the lifespan, including children.

What is Pediatrics?

Pediatrics is a medical specialty focused on the health and well-being of infants, children, and adolescents, from birth through young adulthood. Pediatric providers are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of childhood conditions, provide preventive care such as immunizations and well-child visits, and support families in fostering healthy growth and development.

Does Southern West Virginia Health System have a pediatrician?

Yes! We have a dedicated pediatrician, Dr. Jaime Basham, DO, on-site at our Lincoln Primary Care Center location in Hamlin, WV.

What can I expect from my child's first appointment?

Welcome to Southern West Virginia Health System! We look forward to caring for your child. As a new patient, we want to help make your child's visit as smooth as possible.

Please plan to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment so we can complete your child’s registration. Be sure to bring your photo ID, your child’s health insurance card (if applicable), and a list of any medications your child is currently taking, including prescriptions and vitamins.

Your child’s first appointment will last between 30-45 minutes. During this visit, the provider will take time to get to know your child, review medical and developmental history, and complete a thorough exam. Together, you’ll discuss your child’s health, growth, and any follow-up care that may be needed. Our goal is to provide compassionate, personalized care for your child right from the start.

Does Southern West Virginia Health System accept my insurance?

We accept most in-state insurance plans, including major providers like Medicare, Medicaid, and many commercial carriers. If you're unsure whether your plan is in-network, feel free to call our billing office at 304-824-5860. We're happy to help check your coverage.
