Hamlin, W.Va. – June 17, 2025 – Southern West Virginia Health System is honored to announce that the Dr. Elkins Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Riley Handley, a graduating senior from Lincoln County High School, in recognition of academic excellence, compassion for others, and commitment to pursuing a career in health care.

The scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Gregory Elkins, MD, who served as Southern West Virginia Health System’s Chief Medical Officer until his passing in 2024. A respected leader, tireless advocate for patient care, and mentor to many, Dr. Elkins left an incredible mark on the health of the region and the hearts of colleagues, patients, and the wider community.

“This scholarship reflects Dr. Elkins’ passion for developing future health care professionals who lead with both skill and heart,” said Karyn O’Dell, Chief Communications Officer at Southern West Virginia Health System. “We are proud to carry forward his legacy by supporting future health care professionals who strive to make a lasting impact.”

Handley was selected for their strong academic record, meaningful community involvement, and heartfelt commitment to improving the lives of others. Handley plans to attend Marshall University to study psychology, with aspirations of later becoming a child psychiatrist.

This scholarship was presented on May 29th during Lincoln County High School’s Senior Night.

The Dr. Elkins Memorial scholarship is part of an ongoing effort to carry forward the legacy of Dr. Gregory Elkins by investing in the next generation of health care professionals, who, like him, are driven by a sense of purpose and a heart for service. Southern West Virginia Health System is working to make the Dr. Elkins Memorial Scholarship a sustainable, long-term initiative that will continue to support students for years to come.
