Dr. Elkins is an accomplished family medicine & sports medicine provider with over thirty years of medical experience. He has dedicated his career towards working to improve the health and wellness of the patients he sees by providing local access to family & sports medicine in southern West Virginia.  

Dr. Elkins, MD serves as the Chief Medical Officer, CMO, of Southern West Virginia Health System and makes executive level decisions that impact the progress of providing health and wellness initiatives where rural health care matters most, in the heart of the communities we serve. In addition, Dr. Elkins serves as the Chair of the National Federation of High School Associations (NFHS) Sports Advisory Committee, which focuses on the health and safety of student athletes.

The Chief Medical Officer, CMO, of a health care organization works in an administrative roll to manage the organization’s provider staff and clinical operations.  In addition to hiring and evaluating providers, the CMO also provides guidance on organization safety standards, policy & procedure development, the forecasting of new service lines and service implementation, and more! 

What is a MD?  

MD, referred to as Medical Doctor, is a licensed physician that has graduated from an accredited medical school and completed a three-year residency program. MDs must meet medical and state licensing requirements in order to practice medicine.   

What is Sports Medicine?  

Sports Medicine is a focus of medicine that involves the overall health and safety of athletes that are participating in sports.
