What is a Pulmonologist?

Pulmonologists are physicians that specialize in lung conditions. Along with medical treatment, a pulmonologist also practices education and prevention of lung conditions. Pulmonologists provide patients with the skills to live healthier and breathe easier.

What is pulmonary care?

Pulmonary care, also known as respiratory care, involves the testing, diagnosis, treatment, and management of breathing and lung conditions such as COPD, asthma, sleep apnea, and more.

What is a referral?

A provider referral, also known as referral, is a written recommendation by a medical professional for you to see another doctor, therapist, or specialist.

Do I need to have a referral to be seen by Dr. Donahue-Wood?

While you do need a referral from a primary care provider in order to be seen by Dr. Donahue-Wood, this referral can be from one of our primary care providers or from a provider outside of our organization.

What should I expect at a pulmonary medicine appointment if I am a new patient?

As a new patient to our practice and to Dr. Donahue-Wood, we ask that you arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to process your new patient paperwork. You will be asked to provide your photo identification and medical insurance information to our Front Office member during the check-in process. We ask that you bring a list of all medications you take, both over-the-counter and prescribed, to provide to our nursing staff at the beginning of your appointment with Dr. Donahue-Wood.

Your new patient appointment will take approximately forty-five minutes to establish a strong knowledge of your medical history, assessment of your current condition and services considered necessary by Dr. Donahue-Wood.

What is Pulmonary Function Testing?

To determine how well your lungs are working, we perform non-invasive pulmonary function tests to measure how much air you can breathe in and out of your lungs, as well as how easily and how fast you can blow air out of your lungs. The most common pulmonary function test uses a spirometer, which is a small machine attached by a cable to a mouthpiece.

Pulmonary function testing can detect the two primary types of lung disorders a patient might be experiencing, which are obstructive lung disorders and restrictive lung disorders.

What is obstructive lung disorder?

People with obstructive lung disorders have shortness of breath due to difficulty exhaling all the air from inside the lungs. Obstructive lung diseases include COPD, asthma, and cystic fibrosis.

What is restrictive lung disorder?

People with restrictive lung disorders cannot fully fill their lungs with air. Conditions such as obesity and scoliosis can lead to such restrictions. Other conditions associated with restricted lung capacity include pulmonary fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and ALS.
