Fighting Chronic Disease: Why Annual Exams Are Essential for Your Health and Well-Being
South Charleston, WV – January 23rd, 2025 – Annual exams are more crucial than ever as the prevalence of chronic diseases in the United States continues to climb. According to a study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2024, an estimated 129 million Americans live with at least one major chronic disease, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, or hypertension. Even more concerning, 42% of Americans manage two or more chronic conditions, while 12% are living with five or more.
West Virginia reflects some of the most challenging health trends in the nation, with some of the highest rates of diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and smoking. According to the United Health Foundation’s America’s Health Rankings, West Virginia’s adult obesity rate of 41% is the highest in the United States, alongside a diabetes rate of 17.4%. These statistics highlight the urgent need for preventative care and proactive health management in the Mountain State.
The CDC reports that “chronic diseases are responsible for five of the top ten leading causes of death in the United States.” These conditions not only take a significant toll on individuals and their families but also place a substantial burden on the nation’s healthcare system. Nearly 90% of the $4.5 trillion annual healthcare expenditure in the U.S. is spent managing and treating chronic diseases and mental health conditions. For a state like West Virginia, where rural communities face additional barriers to care, these costs are particularly devastating to families and the healthcare system.
Hannah Guilliams, PA-C, a newly joined provider at SWVHS – Sand Plant, emphasizes the role of preventative care in combating this growing epidemic. “Annual wellness exams play a crucial role in catching health issues early and improving long-term outcomes,” said Guilliams. “They are the most effective tool we have to ensure individuals receive comprehensive care. These exams allow providers to complete all necessary routine screening, perform a physical exam, and address concerns in a timely manner.
Annual wellness exams are essential in combating chronic diseases because they present an opportunity for early detection of risk factors, monitoring and managing existing conditions, and promoting lifestyle changes that reduce the risk of developing or worsening chronic conditions.
During these wellness visits, healthcare providers assess key health indicators such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar, and body mass index (BMI), which can indicate potential health issues like heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Early detection allows for timely interventions and adjustments to treatment plans that can prevent conditions from worsening.
Additionally, these exams provide an opportunity to discuss lifestyle factors like diet, exercise, and stress management—critical components in preventing chronic diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Regular check-ups foster a strong relationship between patients and healthcare providers, ensuring continuous care and improving long-term health outcomes.
Southern West Virginia Health System encourages everyone to prioritize their health by scheduling an annual exam with one of our caring providers. Early detection and proactive care are essential steps in fighting chronic diseases and improving overall well-being.
