Flu Shots Services

Influenza, commonly referred to as Flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus that infects the nose, throat, and sometimes lungs.  Some individuals may experience mild symptoms while others will experience more serious illness, that at times, can lead to death.

The best way to prevent flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year, commonly referred to as a flu shot.

Vaccines do more than keep us protected from the harmful effects of certain diseases. They give us peace of mind that we have taken a proactive approach to keeping ourselves, and all those we love, living our healthiest lives.

What are some factors that go into making a decision on when I, or my child/children, should receive a flu shot?

Your family medicine provider is here to help you navigate the when and why you and your child/children should receive flu vaccinations, no matter your age or stage in life. Some factors that go into making the decision are:

  • Our Age – in most cases the CDC recommends Influenza (flu) vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, each season, with some rare exceptions
  • Our Unique Health Conditions-some individuals are at higher risk of developing serious flu complications because of what is referred to as chronic conditions impacting their immune system
  • Occupations-Some individuals who work in a customer or patient care environment are more likely to be exposed to Influenza (flu) because of the job that they perform
  • And more!

When should I talk with my provider about my risk factors and if the flu shot is right for me?

We encourage you to ask questions about the flu shot, and other vaccinations, at your next appointment.  While you may not receive a flu shot that day because of the availability or time of year of your appointment, making your care plan with your provider to include this opportunity when flu season is announced, will give you peace of mind that you have an action plan to receive this vaccination at the next recommended opportunity.

Do I need to make an appointment to receive a flu shot?

When flu season is upon us, you do not need to make an appointment to receive your flu shot.  We are happy to provide flu shot availability, when flu vaccines have arrived, through our walk-in or same-day appointment service.

Why is it commonly referred to as flu season?

Flu viruses are at the highest rate of infection during the fall and winter and can vary from year to year as to the exact month of the year cases of flu will begin to be reported in our communities. Typically, cases of flu will begin to surface around October, with more cases being reported throughout the November and December months.

Because not everyone will seek medical care or be tested for flu, organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control, (CDC) will give estimates of infection based upon reported data.

What is the difference between the word vaccination and immunization?

Immunization is a process by which a person becomes protected against a disease through vaccination.

Vaccination is the act of introducing a vaccine into the body to produce protection from a specific disease.

Why is it recommended that people receive a flu shot each year?

Influenza, (flu), is a virus that is spread by tiny droplets released when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk.  When an uninfected person comes into contact with these droplets the potential for that individual to become infected with flu increases.  Receiving the yearly flu vaccine allows for your body’s immune system to develop tools, commonly referred to as antibodies, to fight off the flu germs if you are exposed to the droplets.

What are some common symptoms of Influenza (Flu)?

Some common symptoms of flu are:

  • Fever – Or Feeling Feverish/Chills
  • Cough
  • Sore Throat
  • Runny or Stuffy Nose
  • Muscle or Body Aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue (feeling overly tired)
  • Some people may experience digestive system disturbances such as vomiting and/or diarrhea

Should I see a medical provider if I think I have Flu?

Yes.  If you are experiencing symptoms of the Flu, we encourage you to make an appointment with your family medicine provider or come see us through our Walk-In or Same Day Appointment service.  A few reasons to seek medical attention for flu symptoms are:

  • Medications have been developed to help reduce the number of days and severity of flu infection when administered in the beginning days of diagnosis
  • Many of the symptoms associated with Flu are similar to other respiratory infections, such as COVID-19, and treatment and protocols will be different depending on the diagnosis.
